Kauaʻi, Hawaii, United States: Royal Sonesta Kauaʻi Resort
Sonesta International Hotels Corporation is known for its sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere, and The Royal Sonesta Kaua’i Resort in Lihue was no exception. In fact, it would be a thrill to explore some of Sonesta’s other properties as I make my way on the reading around the world trail.

Kauaʻi is the Hawaiian island that makes you feel seen and heard in a spiritual way. This was my second trip to the island, and I can say the spirit of aloha resides here. With its laidback nature, less crowds, and great beaches, Kauaʻi is the perfect location for a reading group of friends.
At Royal Sonesta Kauaʻi, it is all about access to the water and beautiful sunrises. I went before the completion of the renovations, but even then, I found the ocean views stunning. You can also catch relaxing reading moments at the pool, because the property has some of the best available covered pool seating I have come across.
I spent a lot of time between the ocean and pool reading The Female Persuasion, a literary novel that follows a reserved college student as she tries to fit into a world of feminism, ambition, and power. The book itself is an amalgam of personalities and ideals and class and friendships in a contemporary world of academia, and so in some way it clashes with the allure of Kauaʻi, but mostly the juxtaposition works, since the stilling of the mind allows for a clear view of the undercurrents in the novel.

At poolside, there were none of the disarray around saved seats that you sometimes experience at other resorts. Instead, there was a pool concierge available to assist in finding a location and to offer small bites and drinks for sale. From a certain angle at the pool, you can also view the ocean. And to make your time feel eventful, this resort also has a few special activities you could opt to join.
Best spaces for reading: On the beach and poolside.
Recommended book: The Female Persuasion, by Meg Wolitzer.
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic: Sanctuary Cap Cana
Imagine being immersed in serenity and beauty, with numerous hidden spaces to relax, read, sunbathe, or exhale. Everything about this all-inclusive luxury resort feels like an oceanic sanctuary away from the rest of the world. Even the inner courtyards and hallways are serene, with a waterfall of sounds leading up to the rooms. At the back of the building is a Koi pond that hosts beautiful schools of Koi.

We stayed in the Castle section of Sanctuary Cap Cana, which was more peaceful and serene, enclosed by the silent whoosh of waves. There is a serene pathway that separates the buildings and leads to the restaurants and café. One of my favorite things about the pathway was a beautiful pond of blues and greens, a flowing fountain, and the smell in the air punctuated by wet leaves. It felt like an aqueous space of silence that forced you to sit still with your thoughts, or to sit still and read.

My room extended to the ocean, so my favorite pastime at this resort was sitting on my balcony steps watching the sunrise, with a cup of Nespresso and Dominicana in hand, and my toes dipped into waves (because sunrise in December was high tide).
Dominicana is a historical-fiction novel about Ana, a Dominican immigrant who marries an older man and is whisked away from her home and family in the D.R. to New York City. In New York, she finds herself alone and in a tumultuous relationship, with no hope for the better life she was promised. The novel examines the complex relationship the United States has with the Dominican Republic and reading it in the D.R. makes for a perfect backdrop.
Best spaces for reading: Bedroom balcony and pond on the pathway.
Recommended book: Dominicana, by Angie Cruz.
Catalonia, Spain: Sabàtic, Sitges, Autograph Collection
“Live everyday like Saturday” at Sabàtic, Sitges, as is the motto of the Autograph Collection hotel. And Saturday is a good day to end the week with a book.

As is customary for hotels in the Autograph Collection, this hotel has a stand-out design and a unique way to experience it. The hotel encourages the art of reading by providing serene spaces to awaken the senses. There is an unexplainable lightness in the atmosphere. The pale colors and simple elegance of the design in the rooms and lobby contribute to the tenderness of the moments spent there.
We ordered a private transfer from Barcelona and it was an idyllic and stress-free ride there. Less than an hour’s drive outside of Barcelona, in Spain’s Catalonia region, Sitges is a town set between the beautiful Penedés vineyards (more about my vineyard experience to follow) and the Mediterranean Sea. Known as a fishing village, Sitges has been dubbed the “Saint-Tropez of Spain.” Additionally, it is known for its 4-star hotels, for hosting one of the world’s top genre film festivals, and for its surrounding beaches (17 to be exact). It is an area best suited for reading, retreat, and wellness.

My favorite pastime at Sabàtic Sitges was heading to my room balcony to read Guernica, a historical novel about love, family, and war set in the Basque region of Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Although a complex and heavy read, the novel is also light and its love story appealing. Reading it while in the Catalonia region, an area that also has a strong regional identity in Spain, just felt right.
I would say that if you are not a Spanish speaker, take a translation tool with you, or brush up on your Spanish. Unlike Madrid or Barcelona, this is a regional area where it may be difficult to find bilingual staff. The front desk staff at this hotel were bilingual, but others were not.
The hotel’s restaurant, Pasatempo, has a great Mediterranean breakfast buffet in the mornings. The hotel also has wellness activities and options to take electric bikes and explore the quietly paced town. My favorite personal excursion was finding a path that meanders through quiet residential neighborhoods, past small shops, and ends at one of Sitges’ 17 beaches.
Best spaces for reading: Hotel lobby, room balcony.
Recommended Book: Guernica, by Dave Boling
Pennsylvania, United States: The Lodge at Woodloch
This award-winning luxury adults-only spa resort in the Poconos region renews the senses and softens the mind. It is as if you shrug off the stress of everyday living and the stress of the long drive once you enter the facilities. I felt peacefulness permeate the room and emanate to the outdoors as I opened the French doors leading to my veranda and stepped out.

Located in the rural Pocono Mountains, in the part of the Pennsylvania region where it is advisable to have written driving instructions since GPS may not be the most reliable, The Lodge at Woodloch is where you go to retreat. The hotel even advises you to keep phones silenced and keep calls to your room so as to not disturb the tranquility that is clearly nurtured.

I woke early to attend a yoga class and since it seems no one else wanted to wake up early after a night buried in luxurious sheets, I ended up having a private session that was soul-soothing. The property extends for miles, with the options to walk the trails, sign up for archery, go kayaking, and more. Later, that evening, I also attended a painting tutorial, where we painted landscapes using watercolors.

I preferred quiet times exploring the trails, the sanctuary, and reading next to Little Lake Teedyuskung. My favorite pastime was taking nature walks while listening to Concerning my Daughter, a novel about an older, working-class mother who is faced with the financial burden of her adult daughter moving back home. While the novel explores the complicated relationship between an aging mother and her daughter, it also examines modern Korean culture. The pace and contemplative nature of the novel make the resort atmosphere a great backdrop for exploring universal themes of aging, loneliness, and caregiving.
With so many activities and package options, this is a hotel designed to offer readers and reading groups an eclectic reading and wellness experience.
Best spaces for reading: Veranda, walking trails, next to the lake.
Recommended Book: Concerning My Daughter, by Kim Hye-jin
Niagara Falls, Canada: Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa
A 5-Star and 4-Diamond luxury hotel, Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa stands apart for its location and spa. With its close proximity to the falls, this hotel has the most majestic views of Niagara Falls. (For the sake of transparency, I should note setbacks to this hotel: the unfriendliness and unresponsiveness of the staff, and the chaotic parking entry and exit, even with valet).
We drove to Niagara from Massachusetts and instead of staying on the American side, we opted to cross the border and stay on the Canadian side of the falls, where the views are spectacular. The falls are formed by the Niagara River, which drains into Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, forming a vertical drop. Watching and listening to the water going over the crest every minute is something that transforms the mind and body in an enigmatic way.

Since it was our anniversary, hubby and I decided to use up our points and splurge on a suite with an overlook of the ethereal falls from floor-to-ceiling windows. This was just before I had two eye surgeries, so I suffered with ocular pain and pressure from the altitude and weather; still, I was thankful to have a cup of coffee every morning with the Niagara as my view in the morning, and a glass of wine as I watched the fireworks show at night.
I couldn’t read my favorite paperbacks then, but I listened to Playing in the Light, a 9-hour long audiobook set in 19990 post-apartheid Cape Town about a woman who runs a traveling agency but hates to travel, and how she navigates a post-segregated society. This may feel like a heavy read, but the first thing I thought was: what makes a person own a travel agency and yet dislike travel? Of course I had to learn about this nuanced character. In any case, the changing mood and tension of the novel aligns with the falls.
If you are someone who lives with pain or is recovering from pain, the hotel’s Burning Springs Spa has three outdoor Thermal Pools which help aid in pain management, as well as a Himalayan Salt Sauna.
Best spaces for reading: Burning Springs Spa waiting area and at any window overlooking Niagara Falls.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts, United States: Chatham Bars Inn
A 5-Star hotel, Chatham Bars Inn is considered Cape Cod’s most luxurious getaway and was awarded “the #1 Resort in Massachusetts” by the 2025 Conde Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice.
Cape Cod, a peninsula in Massachusetts, is known for its beaches and charming spaces. It is a coastal region with sites and harbors that have been preserved for their natural resources, and also historic homes and cobblestone streets preserved for their heritage. The blend of the natural and the historical invites contemplative vacationing.

Yet it was the rooms at Chatham Bars that embodied my experience. I spent a considerable amount of time enjoying the reading nooks in my cottage—both the bedroom and living room have elegantly designed reading spaces with a view. Could there have been a bookshelf—or to stick with the décor, invisible bookshelves—lined with books from around the world? I think so. I celebrated a birthday here and enjoyed many moments spent in quiet splendor at the reading windows. Reading The Wedding, literary fiction from the Harlem Renaissance era that is set in Martha’s Vineyard but mentions Cape Cod vacationers, one can sense the special community that West writes about.

Martha’s Vineyard is an affluent island that is only a ferry’s ride away from Cape Cod. If you’ve lived in Massachusetts, you know how important both islands are to vacationers. The Wedding is about five generations of a prominent African American and mixed-race family who live in the elite Oval on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. The novel centers around their background, their choices and racial ambiguities, and how it all coalesces into a wedding that adds to the tension.
Separated into the Main Inn which hosts the dining room, and signature guest cottages, Chatham Bars extends across shops, and numerous outdoor spaces for contemplative walks. These cottages could have sprung from a novel, as their shingle-style design helps them glisten next to the ocean, and the elegant interior design is reminiscent of reading around the fireplace. The cottages make a statement—they are designed for a restful getaway that feels like home: a fireplace, reading nooks, separate living area, espresso and coffee bar.
Best spaces for reading: Reading nooks.
Recommended Book: The Wedding, by Dorothy West
